After graduating with a B.S. in Chemical Biology from UC Berkeley, I came to UCSF as a PhD student in Chemistry and Chemical Biology. During my time in the McKerrow lab, I aim to look at the biological function of proteases in both the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni and a closely related free-living flatworm Schmidtea mediterranea, or planaria. By using S. mediterranea as a surrogate model, I hope to elucidate the role played by cysteine proteases in worm viability. My work thus far has focused on isolating proteins from planaria in order to characterize their activity, as well as becoming familiar with biochemical techniques and planaria regeneration.
